Hair shampoos divided into five groups

The shampoo market has many types of hair shampoos. Not that they all really differ much, but there are types with specific ingredients that are better used for a certain hair type. However, do not expect miracles from shampoos because thin hair does not become thick by using a certain shampoo. However, it is important to look for the right type because, for example, dry hair or hair that becomes dirty due to work requires very different shampoos.

Five groups of hair shampoos

The different types of hair shampoos can be divided into five groups:

  1. anti-dandruff shampoo
  2. basic shampoo
  3. cleansing shampoo
  4. nourishing and protective shampoo
  5. volume shampoo

Anti-dandruff shampoo

As the name suggests, these shampoos are especially suitable for people who suffer from dandruff. In any case, thirty to fifty percent of people benefit from an anti-dandruff shampoo because many are hardly aware of having a mild degree of dandruff. In severe cases this is manifested by flakes and itching. The active ingredients of these shampoos target a yeast (Mallassezia) that occurs on the scalp.

Basic shampoo

These shampoos are intended for daily use. They remove any dirt, used styling products and natural hair oil in a non-aggressive manner. This gives them a refreshing effect. Some brands have ingredients that also provide basic care (conditioning) to a modest extent. Basic shampoos are especially suitable for undamaged hair and when the scalp is in good condition. But some basic shampoos degrease the hair too much, causing a ropey feeling. It is therefore best to try out a number of shampoos before making a final choice.

Cleansing shampoo

Cleansing shampoos are designed to effectively remove greasy components and are intended for people with a lot of natural oils. These shampoos are also suitable for those who use a styling product that is difficult to remove with a regular shampoo, such as wax or oil-based products.

Caring and protective shampoo

The shampoos that belong to this group contain more caring ingredients than basic shampoos and cleansing shampoos. Some brands do their best to continually find new caring ingredients. Moreover, a greater care effect can be achieved with special conditioner shampoos in which the caring ingredients are not washed away by the cleansing ingredients. The variants of the caring and protective shampoos are different based on the percentages of the ingredients the shampoos contain. Caring shampoos are especially recommended for damaged hair that is dull and dry. Damage can occur, for example, by excessive blow-drying, backcombing, combing or painting. People can also benefit from a nourishing and protective shampoo if they suffer a lot from static hair.

Volume shampoo

Women with thin hair are often looking for ways to increase volume. This can also be done to some extent with special volume shampoos that clean and refresh just like the basic shampoos. But for more volume results, other means or methods must be used. Better results can be achieved with a special styling product. Thin hair can be caused by hair loss, which sometimes makes the scalp visible. But thin hair also occurs in people with the normal number of hairs, but it does not feel like a full head.

Find the best

Unfortunately, to find the right shampoo, you have no choice but to consult as many descriptions of the shampoos as possible. Of course, the first step is to determine which of the five groups should be searched. That already saves a lot of time and energy. Once a number of shampoos have been determined, it is simply a matter of trying out which shampoo you like best. Many people are very brand loyal and are only interested in new products that come onto the market.
