Use an oil rinse for beautiful, shiny curly hair

Frizzy or curly hair can benefit greatly from a regular oil rinse; especially at extreme temperatures. Curls are fragile and dry, which means they often need extra attention to look beautiful, healthy and shiny. An oil rinse has a similar effect as a hot oil treatment, with the difference that an oil rinse is not done with heated oil, does not have to be left on for a long time and you do not have to rinse all the oil from your hair. Anyway, you too will have to come to the conclusion that if you have natural curls, an oil rinse from time to time is actually indispensable to keep your hair in good condition.

Beautiful and shiny curly hair

You can treat your hair with an oil rinse for several reasons:

  1. Your hair will feel smoother and softer afterwards.
  2. Your hair retains more moisture, making it feel less dry.
  3. It makes detangling your hair easier after washing.
  4. You will see fewer knots at the end of a hair (the smaller your curls, the more likely you are to develop knots at the end of a hair).
  5. It prevents your hair from becoming frizzy quickly, because the oil ensures that there is less friction between your curls.
  6. Your hair gets a subtle, natural-looking shine.
  7. If you don’t have time to wash your hair, an oil rinse will leave your hair fresher and softer.

No need to rinse for very dry hair

If your hair is very dry, you can occasionally choose not to rinse the oil rinse from your hair, but to pat your hair dry immediately after the oil rinse. In this case, you may need to use a smaller amount of oil.

What is an oil flush?

Proceed as follows for an oil flush:

  1. Wash your hair in the shower.
  2. Apply a generous amount of oil to your hair. Don’t be too sparing, your hair must be really soaked with oil. However, be careful not to slip, the shower floor can become very slippery!!
  3. If you have frizzy or thick curly hair, you can now detangle your hair with your fingers or a wide-toothed comb.
  4. Apply a conditioner to your hair and rinse it (along with the oil) from your hair.
  5. Pat your hair dry with a soft towel or an old T-shirt and style your hair as you normally would.

What type of oil is suitable for an oil flush?

An oil rinse essentially envelops your hair. Because a layer of oil remains on your hair after an oil rinse, it is important that you use a liquid oil. In the Netherlands, the use of coconut oil (coconut oil) is not recommended, because coconut oil is only liquid at temperatures higher than 25 degrees; at lower temperatures it is actually more correct to speak of coconut fat.

Olive oil works fine

Olive oil (which you also use for baking; available in any supermarket) is a great choice. Olive oil penetrates deep into your hair. Because olive oil is not a heavy oil, the moisture in your hair is retained well. In addition, olive oil is anti-inflammatory, which keeps your scalp healthy and prevents dandruff.

Finally

In most cases you will use an oil rinse because of dry hair. If you wash your hair with products that are too aggressive, you can damage or dry out your hair. It would be a shame to first dry out your hair with an overly aggressive wash and then restore the moisture balance with an oil rinse.

Washing your hair

It is very important to pay extra attention to the way you wash your curls. How often you wash your hair is also relevant. Also the resources you use; for example, some curls do well when washed with shower gel. Maybe you should wash your hair without shampoo or only with conditioner. It is mainly a matter of a little experimentation to find out which method of washing is gentlest for your hair.
