Holland & Barrett, formerly De Tuinen, is a chain of health stores that can be found throughout the Netherlands. Just like before, the products are made from natural raw materials. According to Holland & Barrett’s corporate vision, it is important to be a place of rest in a hectic life, with full attention to health and care. This translates into healthy and tasty products, where inner and outer care comes first. This formula ensures that the chain is a rapidly growing industry.

The gardens

Willem van Vondelen opens The Garden of Babylon in The Hague in 1981. All care and health products are still made by hand based on natural ingredients. The second store is soon opened. The products were a success and in 1991 De Tuin became part of Ahold and the name was changed to De Tuinen. From that moment on, the number of stores grew rapidly.

The Gardens and Holland & Barrett

The products are no longer made by hand, but are produced by specialists who have been specially selected. What has not changed is that the products are still made from natural raw materials and the health stores want to be a place of peace for everyone where they take the time for tailor-made advice.
Since 2003, De Tuinen has been part of the British Holland & Barrett, a subsidiary of NBTY from the United States. Holland & Barrett has 600 stores in Great Britain. The acquisition has significantly expanded the range of nutritional supplements and sports supplements.

High Growth Awards

Every year an award is presented (High Growth Awards) for “best growing company”. This award is presented by an independent jury of successful entrepreneurs and experts. This jury assesses the companies and an independent accountant also checks the figures. In 2013, this award goes to Holland & Barrett because the chain shows stable growth despite the economic bad times. The company will open twenty new stores in 2014. In 2014, the award will again go to Holland & Barrett, now in the regions of North Holland and Flevoland.

Winner of two European PLMA International Salute to Excellence Awards

In the Skincare category, Holland & Barrett wins with De Tuinen Green Clay Mask , a natural product to cleanse and soften the skin. Since ancient times, clay has been used to cleanse skin and hair and to improve their structure. Tea Tree oil and lavender oil have been added as additional active ingredients.

In the Nutritional & Dietry Supplements category, Holland & Barrett wins with Precision Engineered Pure Casein , developed for active athletes and as a meal replacement in the protein diet. Casein is an animal protein found in milk that is slowly absorbed by the body.

In 2016, the company was awarded the Best Retail Chain 2016 designation in the Natural Beauty category and also acquired the International Trade 2016 designation.

Future Holland & Barrett

In June 2017, it was announced that Holland & Barrett would be acquired by LetterOne from Russian oligarch Michaïl Fridman. LetterOne had made a bid of 2 billion euros for Holland & Barrett, which achieved a turnover of 117.3 million euros in the Netherlands in 2018.

Shops at A-locations

In 2020, the company has more than 200 stores in the Netherlands, these stores are only opened at A-locations, these are the well-known shopping streets of major cities. These locations attract the most visitors and are the most expensive to rent a property. A-locations are often located near a busy shopping center and in the vicinity of the Bijenkorf.
