Poncho in fashion

The poncho is back in fashion. It is one of those items of clothing that is barely worn for a few years and then suddenly reappears and is widely displayed in clothing stores. The winter season 2014/2015 is such an example that you will forget about the poncho again. Another advantage is that there is a wide variety of ponchos for different occasions. So there is always a poncho that can be worn for the occasion. At least if you like ponchos. There are also people who find them very clumsy or shapeless. Still other people only wear a poncho when it rains and they have to cycle. The poncho can then be hung over the handlebars and you will stay dry.

What does fashion dictate?

Material

The advantage is that the fashion is not very explicit. There are many shapes available, as long as you can vary greatly, but especially in materials, designs and colours. In terms of materials, it varies from different types of (hairy) wool, loosely and very tightly knitted, to leather, fur and even plastic or different materials combined.
The wool poncho is by far the most popular poncho and there are so many varieties available that the different ponchos can be worn from a chilly day to severe frost.

Models

Although you cannot vary endlessly with the poncho, you do see many ponchos cut straight at the bottom. On the other hand, the ponchos with fairly extreme points. These ponchos look quite Bohemian. Furthermore, one is slightly more belled than the other, but they all have a decent circle.
Then we increasingly see the poncho that does not necessarily have to be put on over the head, but is closed with buttons, a zipper or even Velcro. The shawl, which when worn looks a lot like a poncho, is also classified as ponchos.

More and more ponchos are getting a kind of sleeve and even side pockets, making it look more like a Marie Antoinette-style jacket. Yet these models are also classified as ponchos.

To colour

In terms of colours, we are of course in the warm winter colors such as:

  • Burgundy
  • wool white to beige
  • anthracite and black
  • warm aqua green
  • midnight blue

Because the materials are combined in many models, the designs are slightly calmer. You do see the black/white block a lot. When colors are combined, it is often black, gray and wool white or wool white with beige.

Possibilities to wear a poncho

Since we saw Queen Maxima in the shawls, these and the traditional ponchos have become much more fashionable again. Where they used to only be used to get from the car to the house, for example, their use has now become much wider. Since there are many different materials, it is logical that the poncho can also be worn while shopping, on the bike or while walking. They are no longer stiff and frumpy materials, but you can do anything in them and they protect you from the cold and partly also from the rain. Depending on the material, how the poncho is knitted and what kind of nutrition it contains, there is a modern poncho for every type of weather.

Price range

Of course, how much a poncho costs depends on the material and exclusivity. But a woolen poncho starts at around €50 and goes up to several hundred. If you take a poncho with wool mixed in it, you can buy ones for around €30.
The plastic poncho for the bicycle is available from €30. Only those that really keep out all moisture only start at sun 60.

Finally

The poncho can be worn again and enthusiasts always have more than one at home. Just as many people want to alternate coats, many people also want to alternate ponchos. With the clothing stores that have purchased them in large numbers, there is plenty of choice.
