Your first chakra, the root chakra

Every person has seven chakras, of which the first chakra is called the root chakra. The first chakra physically affects your kidneys, blood and skeleton. It also affects stress hormones, such as adrenaline. Finally, your first chakra influences emotions, especially anger. You can balance your first chakra with activities that connect you with the earth, such as exercise and gardening.

Where is your first chakra located?

Your first chakra is located at the level of your tailbone. It is the lowest chakra and provides a connection with the earth. It is actually the root of your energy system. That is why your first chakra is also called the root chakra.

How does your first chakra influence your body?

Each chakra influences a number of specific body parts. Your first chakra affects your kidneys, your blood and your skeleton. If your first chakra flows too much or too little, you may notice this in your feet, knees or hips, or because you develop arthritis, kidney stones, bone problems or an autoimmune disease, for example. This does not apply the other way around: if you develop one of these diseases, the cause does not automatically have to lie with your first chakra.

How does your first chakra influence your hormonal system?

Each chakra also influences a specific (endocrine) gland that secretes a certain hormone. The gland affected by your first chakra is your adrenal glands. Your adrenal glands secrete different hormones, namely adrenaline, norepinephrine and corticosteroids. Adrenaline and noradrenaline trigger a fight or flight response when danger threatens. In case of fear or stress, but also in case of anger, cold, heat or pain, a lot of adrenaline and noradrenaline is released. That is why these hormones are also called stress hormones. Corticosteroids ensure a healthy immune system, healthy blood pressure and a good balance in your water and salt balance.

How does your first chakra influence your emotions?

The emotion associated with the first chakra is anger. Being angry is a healthy emotion that shows that you have the will to survive. If you do not express your anger enough, it can turn into anger and violence (fight response) or into depression (flight response). Try to be open to your emotions. This way you can discover where your own needs lie. If you know what you want, you can adjust your life accordingly.

What can you do yourself?

A well-functioning first chakra gives you the life force to live a safe and stable life. It gives you the feeling that you have the right to organize your life the way you want. Any activities that connect you with the earth can help you balance your first chakra. For example, exercising is a good activity. Preferably a sport where your feet touch the ground. Walking and gardening are also good activities for your first chakra. Contact with the earth restores the energy that flows between you and the earth. That will help you to clarify your own wishes. You are worth focusing your life on!
