Is cappuccino healthy or unhealthy?

It is often not realized that drinking a delicious cup of cappuccino is unhealthier than a cup of coffee and is often accompanied by more calories, which means that cappuccino can sometimes be seen as an unhealthy fattener.

What is cappuccino?

Cappuccino is considered an Italian coffee preparation. Yet cappuccino does not originate in Italy, but in the Austrian capital Vienna. Vienna is also seen as the coffee capital of Europe. With cappuccino, the coffee consists of 1/3 part espresso, 1/3 part milk and 1/3 part milk foam. When making the tastiest cappuccino, it is best to use cold skimmed or semi-skimmed milk for the milk foam.

Coffee and diet?

Anyone who goes on a diet does not have to worry about not being able to drink coffee anymore. Many diets even indicate that you can drink unlimited coffee. Coffee naturally contains no calories and because coffee contains potassium, magnesium and vitamin B3, drinking a cup of coffee has a beneficial effect on blood pressure. In addition, drinking coffee stimulates the metabolism, causing the body to burn calories faster. Coffee is said to protect against cardiovascular disease. Scientists cannot yet determine this with great certainty. Some research results indicate that coffee may have a positive effect on the prevention of cardiovascular disease, other research reports indicate the opposite. It has been scientifically established that coffee drinkers have a lower risk of type 2 diabetes.

Number of calories in cappuccino

Drinking coffee therefore goes well with following a diet. However, there is a catch. Drinking coffee is only healthy and unlimited during a diet, when the coffee is drunk black and no sugar or milk is added. As soon as sugar and/or milk are added to the coffee, the cup of coffee quickly becomes a calorie bomb. When we look at the number of calories in a cup of cappuccino, we average:

  • Cappuccino prepared with 100 ml semi-skimmed milk: 47 kcal
  • Cappuccino prepared with 100 ml whole milk: 64 kcal

Cappuccino therefore contains many more calories than black coffee or coffee with 1 cube of sugar, which contains an average of 16 calories.

Unhealthy fats

In addition to the number of calories, a cup of cappuccino is also unhealthier than a cup of coffee due to the number of unhealthy fats a cup of cappuccino contains. The number of fats and other nutritional values of a cup of cappuccino depends on the type of milk and the preparation method, but on average we can assume that a cup of cappuccino contains 6.3 grams of fat. This is no less than 10 percent of the daily recommended amount of fat. Of these fats, 4 grams are saturated fat. Saturated fat is considered dangerous fat. This is because too much saturated fat can lead to health problems. This also includes, for example, cardiovascular disease.
